April 16, 2014: Day 4 Japan

When I woke up, me and my Uncle went on a bike ride. We took some photos and had an adventure. We went into cool Japanese alleys and there was cherry blossoms too! Then we went back and went into the pool. The pool was so cool looking. It was half purple on one side and half blue on the other. They had a sauna and a steam room too! Then we went to the Golden Pavilion. They had a Pavilion that was all real gold leaf. After that temple we went to Ryoanji Temple that had a rock garden/zen garden. It was almost 500 years old.

We met up with our tour guide Sue. She took us to the Bamboo Forest and showed us around. She also taught us how to meditate. She said you put your thumbs together and one hand over another. Then you breath in through your nose and out through your nose 10 times while keeping your eyes open, so you don't fall asleep. The bamboo garden was awesome. Bamboo everywhere. Sue said that in the right conditions bamboo can grow 3 to 4 feet in a day!!

We had lunch next. I had a bowl of noodles like usual with shrimp tempura. It was delicious! We sat at a  traditional Japanese table where we knelt.

After lunch we went to Nijo Castle. They had this palace where the Shogun and Samurai had meetings. It was huge. It took 20 minutes to walk around the perimeter of the Castle. The inside of the house was a traditional Japanese house with traditional sliding doors and very plain rooms and gilded silk walls too. The Shogun's were very paranoid. They had body guards at all times. And when the Shogun was having a meeting with the Samurai the Samurai weren't allowed to bring their sword inside. They could carry their dagger to protect themselves but the Shogun made them hold a fan in their right hand so they couldn't reach for their dagger. The Samurais were all right handed. Whoever killed the Shogun would become the Shogun, so the Shogun had to protect himself.

Next we went to the Geisha Show in Gion District. During the Geisha Show we first did a tea ceremony which two of the Giesha's performed the tea ceremony and after that the show began. The theater was a school actually. It was very cool. The backdrop for the Geisha Show as painted silk. It was a great show. The Geishas reenacted four seasons. Older women played these weird instrument that looked like a guitar and sang tribally. The Geishas played drums and lutes and wore these beautiful silk blue kimonos.

Tonight we are having room service in our suite.
