It was our only full day in Yangon. We began the day with driving to a Nunnery and see the little girl novices, which are young monks. The Monks where the dark red robes and the nuns where light pink robes. All of the monks shave their heads, even including the girls! Some of novices were deciding if they wanted to be a life time nun or not. We also brought pens and paper for them and took pictures with the girl nuns.
At the monastery where the monks live we met some of the young adults that were on Semester At Sea. Semester At Sea is a semester of school on a boat traveling the world. Walking into the Monastery we were able to see little boys and watch them become novices (young monks) at the monastery. They receive robes, a fan and a bowl for the offerings they will collect of food and money. These little boys were just being introduced to the monastery and later they might decide if they want to be a monk for their whole life. The monks and novices can decide to be a monk or Novice for 3 days, a month or even a lifetime. If they leave the monastery they can decide to come back and become a monk again. We also brought the monks paper, pencils and pens. Before eating their lunch they all recited a prayer like saying giving thanks for the food that was given to them.
For lunch we ate in a Sky Scraper on the 20th floor at Sky Bistro. After that we headed into the market for around 40 minutes. The market was filled with jewelry, sandals, shoes, antiques and other items. This market was pretty big and we even saw some ivory in one of the antique stores, which is elephant and is illegal in America.
For dinner we met up with my mom's friend's parents from Burma who lived in Washington, DC where mom grew up. The Lwins came back to Burma when it was safe to return. We talked and ate dinner with them until it was time to leave. The Lwins were not married or dating when they went to America 50 years ago. But they did know each other. But while they were in the United States their parents told them to stay in the USA because it became too dangerous for them to return to Burma because the government was taken over by the military. They were never able to see their parents before they died.
At the hotel we said goodbye to Kendall as she was leaving to go back to Utah. We had some funny moments together with all of us.
