September 17, 2014 (Cape Town, South Africa)

Today we went to Robben Island. As we were touring the prison we could see life from the prisoners' point of view. Nelson Mandela was in prison on Robben Island for 18 years but was in prison for a total of 27 years. When we were in the prison we were able to see Nelson Mandela's prison cell where he spent 18 years of his life. Robben Island was the maximum security prison for South Africa at the time. On Robben Island our tour guides were former prisoners from Robben Island, and one still lived on the Island.

The political prisoners showed a lot of perseverance and hope that apartheid would end. They made a great sacrifice so that there could be racial equality, freedom for all, not just whites.

I liked seeing Mandela's cell. It was also interesting to see the quarry where when the former political prisoners had a reunion. There Mandela placed a rock as he was leaving the quarry and each prisoner laid a rock onto the pile and the pile still stands there in remembrance of forgiveness and of a Rainbow Nation, having a country where all different races had their freedom.

After, we returned by boat and went back to our hotel. As soon as we were ready to go explore again we ate lunch and headed to the aquarium. The aquarium was marvelous. My favorite fish at the aquarium was the Box Fish. it looked like a spotted box with a face and fins coming out of it. But there were other things cool to like the big Sea Turtle. Today was rainy and wet but great.
