September 22, 2014 (Cape Town to Johannesburg on Rovos Rail)

September 22, 2014

Rovos Rail! Today we were going on Rovos Rail! As soon as we ate breakfast we had a driver take us to the Rovos Rail check-in. After the check-in they had us sit-down and listen to the founder of Rovos Rail, Rohan Vos! He told us what to expect and what the rules are. The Rovos that we are taking is going from Cape Town, South Africa to Johannesburg, South Africa. It will take us about 2.5 days to get to Johannesburg. As I walked out of the building I started hearing a violin, a Violinist and a guitarist were playing their music right out front of the building. A employee that was working for the rail guided us to where the train was. A few moments after we got on the train a employee showed us how to use all the things in our room. Our room was small, but very cool, there were two twin beds, a wardrobe, and a little bathroom, our room looked out the left side of the train. Our room was named “Cheetah”.

We had a four course lunch around an hour after we got settled in.  Our starter was a traditional South African Bobotie, spiced meat, and then for the second course we had a shrimp kabob, then a cheese course, then something like a swirly donut for dessert. The meal was ok, and pretty fancy. But dessert was exceptional!  After lunch I did my homework while my mom read her book.

Shortly after lunch we went in a tunnel that was 13 km long! It was also interesting to see the landscape change from wet to dry. At first out our window we saw vineyards, big farms, and big mountains. It was very green. Later in the day when it was a desert all we saw were dry mountains and sage brush. It kind of looked like parts of Utah.

In the evening we stopped at a little town named Matjiesfontein where we took a old 1950 tour bus with a funny driver making jokes every other 10 sec. We walked through a museum there that had collections of things. My favorite thing I saw at Mtijiesfontein was the old colored levers that moved the train tracks. My favorite thing was riding on the double decker bus.

Dinner on the train was “very nice”. The dress code was coat and tie. Dinner was also a four course meal. My favorite part of the meal was the cheese course. As soon as dinner was over we settled down and went to bed.
